Via Hellenica 2015

The Classic Pre War rally

Older cars, older stones. The Pre War edition of the Via Flaminia will be held in Greece, thus the name change in Via Hellenica.rally-map-greece

A completely new territory, which will be discovered with the help of Scuderia Triskelion, the rally organiser in the Peloponnese.

Without stopping at every excavation, the rally will inevitably visit some of the cultural highlights of Greece’s old history. See the rally route section.

Those who wish so can have their car shipped to the Firenze Airport on Saturday September 26. The ferry will be leaving the next day. It is a beautiful drive of less than 300 km.

The ferry will bring all the cars to Patras, where the rally will officially begin, September 28, 2015. The rally will first be going along the coast of the Peloponnese, via Olympia to the south with its medieval fortresses. Via small villages, it will then be going back north over the mountain roads towards the incredibly well preserved amphitheatre of Epidaurus and the strait of Corinth. Once on the main land we leave the lovely coastal roads for the mountains. We visit the Oracle of Delphi and proceed over increasingly small mountain roads towards the Meteora Cloisters. We have one entire day for the guided visit to different cloisters.

After eleven nights in Greece we have one more ride towards Igoumenitsa before taking the night ferry back to Ancona. We will be arriving there on Saturday October 10. The next day a truck will be ready to pick up your car at the Firenze airport.

Depending on the road conditions the rally will do some 130 to 200 km a day. The accommodations, especially those on the coast are superb. There is a limited availability for 25 participating pre-war cars and one or two early post wars.

Day 0; Sunday September 27, Ancona

Antigo-Granaro-anconaThe ferry will be leaving Ancona at 16:30 on Sunday. You can either have your car shipped to Firenze Airport on Saturday and drive the remaining 283 km to Ancona or drive yourself to Ancona. We suggest the lovely B&B Antigo Granaro to you. They have 6 rooms, but more importantly, they have space for your car and trailer.

We provide shipping of your car to Florence Airport. Your car will be deliverd to you when disembarking the flights from:

Amsterdam: 11:55
Brussel: 13:5
Düsseldorf: 12:15
London: 10:15

Day 1; Monday September 28, Patras - Loutra Killinis: 83 km

We will disembark the ferry in the early afternoon and without further ceremony take the smaller roads towards our first destionation, Olympia.
The roads are excellent and the scenery is just amazing.

The weather should be excellent, the party can begin at the pool.

Day 2; Tuesday September 29, Loutra Killinis - Messinia: 193 km

We leave our beach hotel for a drive over the hills towards Olympia. The roads are narrow and tortuous.rally-greece-olympia

Olympia is of course one of the “not-to-miss” archaeological sites of Greece. In the course of this rally you will be getting a much better understanding of the social and cultural life of the ancient Greek.

The games, which whwew hwls in Olympia where only open to Greek and during the games the Greek states would not wage war against each other.

While your car is being guarded you can visit the Olympia archaeological museum, have a snack at the archaeological site or visit one of the many restaurants in Olympia.

rally-greece-apollo-temple Now we take a beautiful mountain road, not steep, no sharp bends, just great driving. At the highest point we arrive at the temple of Apollo Epicourios. This is one of the best-preserved temples of Greece, partly because it is so remote from any habitation.

westin-resort-costa

Once gain we go the beach. We will stay two nights in one of the most welcoming beach resorts of Greece.

Day 3; Wednesday September 30, Costa Navarino: 120 km

greek-villageToday is a facultative day; those who whish so can stay at the resort and either play some golf or go to the beach. You can also join the rally and drive along the coast to the old cities of Methoni and Koroni. It is a very nice drive along some villages where the time has stood still and back over the mountains of the peninsula. methoni-greece

Day 4; Thursday October 1, Costa Navarino - Gerolimenas: 204 km

We drive across on of the three “fingers” of the Peloponnese towards the middle “finger”, the Mani region. Until recent years many Mani villages could be reached only by sea. Today a narrow and winding road extends south to our luxury village-hotel.rally-village-peloponnese

We will have lunch in one of the typical seaside villages on the way.kyrimi-rally-hotel

Day 5; Friday October 2, Gerolimenas - Vitina: 213 km

mystras-church-classic-car-rallyWe now leave the southernmost point of our rally and go up north. We now take the other side of the peninsula and drive along the accidented coast for some 30 kilometres. We now go into the rugged mountains of the Peloponnese. We pass Sparta and stop for lunch at Mystras. Mystras is an old fortified town renown for its many orthodox churches.

From Mystras it is a beautiful drive on the easy road along wine ranks towards our stylish mountain hotel in the centre of the Peloponnese.

For a while we drive along the coast. The view is stunning. Finally we leave the sea for the dry planes of the mainland.

From there we drive in the mountains and along a beautiful lake, which reflects the mountain around it.lake-classic-rally-greece

We now are clearly driving into the (high) mountains. Bring your sweater; this is not Greece from the prospectus.

Day 9, Tuesday October 6, Ano Chora - Karpenisi: 113 km

rally-roadToday is a day with a limited number of kilometres. We head straight north and take increasingly small roads. Beautiful roads between the mountains. Not really going over them but just seemingly staying at the same altitude. The views are amazing.
