Via Flaminia Classic 2017 May

La Dolce Vita on wheels

Slow food, fast cars and a good life. That is our association with the Dolce Vita. And that is exactly what the Via Flaminia will be recreating. You bring your oldtimer and we take care of the rest.

Central Italy appeals to all our senses. The scent of the lavender on the high planes, the flavour of the fresh ingredients in the meals, the sound of the wind and the light of the sun demarking the shade in the ancient villages.

After disembarking the motor rail in Verona we will drive only a few kilometres to the Nicolis car museum where the actual start will take place.

The first night will be spent in a characteristic hotel in the middle of the town of Reggio Emilia. From there on the road goes south, crossing Tuscany and Umbria. We will be staying two nights in a fantastic hotel not far from Rome.

On the way back to the finish we will be crossing once more the high planes above Norcia. Depending on the month they are ether in different shades of green, yellow, purple or red. The scenery is truly amazing.

We will be spending the night in a city, which is waiting to be discovered as a tourist attraction. Ancient Ascoli Piceno has some remarkable architecture. We will be staying in an old Palazzo in the city centre.

The actual finish will be not far from San Marino in a friendly hotel in a small hill perched town overlooking the Adriatic Sea.

As always, the Via Flaminia is a layback rally where the competition serves the atmosphere, winning is not a goal on itself. Those who want to have a stop for a coffee can do so. No time constraint. The classification is done via navigation and the competition for the last place is sometimes fierce.

In order to attract younger participants we have devised a discount formula. For every year that the sum of the driver and navigator is smaller than 100; they get a discount of 1% (with a maximum of 20%). (NB: Only the year of birth counts in reference to the year 2017).

Moreover, for every two years that they are younger than 100, they can bring in a car that is one year younger than 1974. Of course this does not count for the pre-war edition.

The May rally, which will be held from May 20 – 27 will hold a Sport Class as well as a Tour Class.

The Sport Class drivers will get roads, which are slightly more difficult to find, which are not as well maintained and some more kilometres.

Saturday May 20: 150 km

After offloading the motor rail it is only a few kilometres to the Nicolis Museum. A great collection, which started as a private collection and is now a museum run by the daughter of the founder.

The start will be after the lunch in the museum. It is a relatively short trip through the rice fields in the Po valley to the hotel in the centre of Reggio Emilia, a nice and ancient city at the foot of the Appenini.

Sunday May 21: 180 km

The Sunday we cross the Apennine into Tuscany. The roads are narrow, sometimes good with a beautiful view sometimes in need of maintenance in the middle of the dark forest.apennines-rally

After a day’s drive we arrive at our destination, an old hamlet around a big Residential house and turned into hotel accommodation.

Tuscany-classic-carWe are crossing Tuscany into Umbria, beautiful drive and we are aiming for a lunch in the Centre of Arezzo. We stayed there in 2011 with the pre-war rally. Hopefully we can get the authorization for the Classic rally as well.

After a beautiful day we arrive at what is, arguably, the most impressive and beautiful city of Italy, not on the tourist track yet. But definitely worth it: Gubbio.

We stay in the city centre across of the main square and the Municipio or town hall.

From Mediaeval Gubbio we have a very nice drive through Tuscany. The villages are perched high on the hills and we drive through the fertile planes towards Rome.civitella-castellana

We arrive in the ancient Etruscan lands for one of our two nights at the very nice Boutique Hotel in a little ancient fortified town. Certainly an enchanted setting. The town by itself is worth the visit.

After the two nights in the comfortable hotel in the little town of Civita Castellana we drive towards our next destination. The beautiful city of Ascoli Piceno, largely unknown to tourist. castellucio--

norcia-umbriaAgain we drive through Umbria and climb to the incredible high plane above Norcia. With some luck the plane is full of collared flowers, red, purple or yellow.

We will be staying in the center of town in two ancient monumental buildings belonging to the Palazzo Guiderocchi.

Already the last day. We drive through the hills in the Marche with a view on the Adriatic Sea. The waters are tempting, in fact too tempting. We have lunch at the seaside. Swimwear allowed.beach-restaurant

recanatiFrom there it is only a small drive to the enchanted city of Recanati, high on a hill in the cool summer breeze. The city is a really undiscovered pearl as many towns in the Marche. We will be staying in the comfortable Gallery Hotel Recanati, overlooking the Adriatic Sea for the clossing dinner and prize awarding ceremony.
