Via Flaminia Classic 2015 Juni

Uncharted territories in the Alps

In 2014 we celebrated 10 years of Via Flaminia. A celebration shared with many, the rallies where sold out.

It is now time to look at uncharted territories. We are going high, high into the Alps on the border of Italy and France.classic-car-rally-map

As always we offer the possibility to take the car train to the starting point of the rally and back home. We start near Alessandria, at the incredible collection of Lancia Martini race and rally cars of Mr. Schön.

The first night will be spent amongst the Barolo wine yards. High from the wine we will be going even higher, up the Alps for a series of seven passes over the 2000 meters in three days.

After two nights we return to the Italian soil for some more layback driving up to Tuscany.

As always, the Via Flaminia is a layback rally where the competition serves the atmosphere at the bar and is not a goal on itself. Those who want to have a stop for a coffee can do so. No time constraint. The classification is done via navigation and the competition for the last place is sometimes fierce.

In order to attract younger participants we have devised a discount formula. For every year that the sum of the driver and navigator is smaller than 100; they get a discount of 1% (with a maximum of 20%). (NB: Only the year of birth counts in reference to the year 2015).

Moreover, for every two years that they are younger than 100, they can bring in a car that is one year younger than 1974. Of course this does not count for the pre-war edition.

The June rally, which will be held from June 6 – 13  will only hold a Tour Class. The May rally will also hold a Sport Class.

Saturday June 6th: 100 km

giorgio-schon-martini-lancia-collectionTwo years ago we started one of the three rallies of that year at the winery of Mr. Schön. We loved it, not only for his wine, but especially for his hospitality, the great lunch and his amazing collection of Lancia Martini racers. In 2015 we will once more be Mr. Schön’s guest.

The actual start is after the lunch. The drive to Barolo is lovely, the area is lightly cultivated and wineries and farms alternate in a hilly landscape.

Sunday June 7th: 240 km

rally-stijle-bergen-tunnelsFrom Barolo we go west, this will be the day of the first mountains. Slowly they creep upon us, we go into a valley, which gets narrower and narrower until it ends and we are forced to go right. Not a major road, a road like we like it, carved in the rocks many decades ago. The speed is slow, the scenery is bewildering.

Back on the other side we have our last Italian lunch for the coming days in a very welcoming restaurant.

Just when the sun starts to be uncomfortably warm, we start our ascent into France. The road is very good but sometimes steep. No time can be lost navigating, there is one road, and she goes up before going down.border-italy-france-classic-car-rally

villa-hotel-rally-frankrijkAfter some more mountaineering we arrive in our Villa for the coming two nights.

Monday June 8th 136 km

rally-alpes-maritimes-frankrijkAn easy drive, or should I say an easy navigation. Just follow the road up and own and up and,…, you got the point. Some more cols and some more spectacular sights. But this day also some gorges to change the scenery.

 alpes-maritimes-classic-car-rally

The lunch is at everyone’s own discretion, so you can be back in time for a dip in the pool.

Tuesday june 9th: 230 km

alps-rally-col-bonette

We exchange the mountains for the see, but not after taking the highest road in Europe. alps-bonette-pass-rallyThe scenery is exalting. What more can we say.

castelaro-golfTowards the Mediterranean Sea we take some smaller mountain roads into Italy.

On the way to our sea-front hotel we have the choice of taking the last kilometres by highway or along the Italian Riviera road.

We now leave the sea for the interior where the roads are much less crowded.wine-barolo-classic-rally The lunch is not included so you have all the freedom to choose your restaurant and eat at your own pace.

Navigation is much more a task now than in the Alps but winning is not the goal; rally-hotel-acqua-termeit is enjoying the scenery and oneself. At the end of the day we arrive in Acqui Terme for the night.

Thursday June 11th: 193 km

We drive to our final hotel where we will be staying two nights. italie-klassieke-rallyDriving slowly down south into the province of Parma, there is less and less traffic and the villages get scarcer. Parma is famous for its Prosciutto di Parma, the Parma Ham, but the whole area is renowned for its sausage production, as well as for the Parmigiano Reggiano the Parmesan cheese and some kind of pasta like gnocchi di patate, cappelletti (or anolini) in brodo, tortelli with different stuffing. You will have plenty of time to taste the local specialties.

tabiano-castletabiano-rally-hotelSlowly the leave the cultivated hills for the Apennines. There is less and less traffic and the villages get scarcer. Finally we arrive at our destination: the Borgo di Tabiano with its castle.

Friday June 12th: 176 km

We conclude the rally with a drive into the mountains towards Tuscany. Not as high as the Alps but not less challenging.

mountain--rally-franceWhen you drive through these mountains you know where the Italians get their fresh produces. We share our last lunch in an exquisite restaurant along the route.

We have the prize awarding ceremony during diner.
