What do aerospace technology and dentistry have in common ?

The aerospace industry has been leading in developing strong, pliable and light materials. Advanced Dental Materials (ADM) team of scientists and clinicians has been using fibre reinforced composites (FRC's) from the aerospace to develop high-tech materials for applications in prosthodontics, orthodontics and traumathology.

Prepreg stands for preimpregnated reinforcement, a term frequently used in the aerospace industry. To create a "composite prepreg" rigid reinforcing fibres are placed into a weak liquid resin, the "matrix". This process is carried out in an automated mode allowing for precise control of the fibre content and orientation as well as minimization of defects, thus, producing semi finished material of extremely reproducible properties which is the main reason for its application in aerospace structures. Epoxy is the resin of choice for aerospace prepregs due to its ability to stay pliable after partial cure (so called B-stage).

DentaPregTM: High-tech for your smile

DentaPregTM is a fibrous composite prepreg based on light curing dental resin specially designed to provide the same type of pliability without being pre-cured. Resin matrix protects the fibres during handling and holds them in proper position during forming. Hardened resin bonds the device to the tooth structure and protects fibres from the oral environment.

Ease of use is one of the major advantages of DentaPregTM materials from ADM. During the developmental stage, ADM has worked together with leading orthodontists, prosthodontists, periodontists and dental surgeons, using their suggestions and advices to modify both the materials and their final shape and form. This fruitful collaboration continues benefiting all the parties involved - patients, dentists and ADM. Our goal is to give dentists a high-tech product without restricting their creative freedom in forming the final appliance.

Unlike other products using fibrous reinforcements, DentaPregTM materials are in the form of "prepregs", known well to aerospace industry. There is no need to wet any rope, tape or ribbon with resin when using DentaPregTM. Everything has been done to increase the ease of use before individually packaging the "prepregs". As a result, forming a provisional bridge, retainer or stabilizing traumatized or reimplanted tooth is very similar to using ScotchTM tape. Our quest to help dentist to simplify indicated procedures, reduce chair side time and practically eliminate the use of a dental laboratory for these procedures can result in an increase revenue and diminish work load of a common dental practice.
