NATURAL KILLER CELLS AGAINST ACUTE MYELOID LEUKEMIA

Background
Each year more than 50.000 people aged 60 years and older are diagnosed worldwide with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) Despite the advances in chemotherapy of cancer over the past 20 years, the prognosis of elderly AML-patients remains very poor: within 3 years 90% of these patients will die. Cellular immune therapy with NK-based Donor Lymphocyte Infusion (DLI) for blood related cancers like AML has the potential to offer these patients a better and prolonged life expectancy after diagnose. Technology
Glycostem Therapeutics (GCT) is an young innovative lifescience company which has developed an unique method for the ex-vivo expansion and differentiation of hematopoietic cells as alternative. This proprietary know how concerns the ex-vivo expansion and differentiation of Hematopoietic stem Cells into functional NK-cells. [... read more]

Proof of concept
In order to achieve acceptance of NK-based DLI as a new treatment of cancer, proof of concept needs to be documented by executing experimental clinical trials. For that purpose GCT will study together with leading transplantation centres the clinical potential of NK-cell treatment of patients suffering from Acute Myeloid Leukemia.

Progress
In October 2009 a project by UMC St. Radboud and GCT under the Translational Research Program of ZonMW (a governmental subsidy organisation related to Min-VWS) was rewarded by a large subsidy of 1,4 mln. Euros. [... read more]
